Popular and healthy - The Mediterranean Diet

August 2022 | Paul Thiede

Experts say it all the time: the Mediterranean diet is healthy, especially for the heart. It is based primarily on plants and includes the traditional flavors of the region. And the best thing is that it is also delicious and varied.

What does the Mediterranean diet include?

The Mediterranean diet is a way of eating based on the traditional cuisines of Mediterranean countries such as Greece, Italy and of course the south of France. Plant-based foods such as whole grains, vegetables, legumes, fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices form the basis of the diet. Olive oil is the main source of additional fats. Fish, seafood, dairy products and poultry are included in moderation. Red meat, processed carbohydrates and sugar are consumed only occasionally. And yes, red wine is also included in moderation!

Why is the Mediterranean diet so healthy?

The body gets all the essential building blocks, which is what makes the Mediterranean diet so healthy. It is rich in vitamins and polyphenols, which have anti-inflammatory effects. This reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and strokes. Especially for people with high blood pressure, this type of diet is recommended. And Mediterranean cuisine is also good for the brain, as it can promote and maintain its function.
Sometimes this type of diet can also help people lose weight. While some people fear that such a "Mediterranean diet" makes them put on weight, more and more research indicates that the opposite is true. And hunger should not be a problem with this form of nutrition. Because fiber and healthy fats, for example from avocados, legumes or fish make you feel satisfied.
